چکیده

We give an overview of the analysis of a new type of bursting (“ghostbursting”) seen in pyramidal cells of weakly electric fish. We start with the experimental observations and characterization of the bursting, describe a compartmental model of a pyramidal cell that undergoes ghostbursting and the development of a simplified yet realistic conductance–based model of this cell. This model then motivates a minimal leaky integrate–and–fire model that also has the qualitative features of ghostbursting.

Mode Locking in a Periodically Forced "ghostbursting" Neuron Model

We study a minimal integrate-and-fire based model of a “ghostbursting” neuron under periodic stimulation. These neurons are involved in sensory processing in weakly electric fish. There exist regions in parameter space in which the model neuron is mode-locked to the stimulation. We analyse this locked behavior and examine the bifurcations that define the boundaries of these regions. Due to the ...

Ghostbursting: the effects of dendrites on spike patterns

We present a two-compartment model of a pyramidal cell from the electrosensory lateral line lobe of weakly electric 2sh. These cells undergo a complex form of bursting, previously labeled “ghostbursting”, and our model reproduces many aspects of experimental recordings. We analyze the e"ects of varying both the conductance between the somatic and dendritic compartments in the model, and the rat...

Motion processing across multiple topographic maps in the electrosensory system

Abstract Animals can efficiently process sensory stimuli whose attributes vary over orders of magnitude by devoting specific neural pathways to process specific features in parallel. Weakly electric fish offer an attractive model system as electrosensory pyramidal neurons responding to amplitude modulations of their self-generated electric field are organized into three parallel maps of the bod...

Plasticity of feedback inputs in the apteronotid electrosensory system.

Weakly electric fish generate an electric field surrounding their body by means of an electric organ typically located within the trunk and tail. Electroreceptors scattered over the surface of the body encode the amplitude and timing of the electric organ discharge (EOD), and central components of the electrosensory system analyze the information provided by the electroreceptor afferents. The e...
